n8n: The Automation Tool Your Business Hasn't Heard Of (Yet)
If you’ve looked into automating parts of your business, you’ve probably come across names like Zapier, Make, or Microsoft Power Automate. They’re well-known, well-marketed, and widely used.
But there’s another tool quietly gaining traction among businesses that want more control, better value, and no limits on what they can connect — and it’s called n8n.
What is n8n?
n8n (pronounced “n-eight-n”) is a workflow automation platform. In simple terms, it connects your business tools together and automates the tasks that flow between them.
Got a new enquiry from your website? n8n can automatically add them to your CRM, send a confirmation email, notify your team on Slack, and log it in a spreadsheet — all without anyone lifting a finger.
It does the same job as Zapier or Make, but with some important differences.
Why n8n over the big names?
It can be self-hosted
This is the big one. Unlike Zapier, which runs entirely on someone else’s servers in the US, n8n can be hosted on your own infrastructure — or on a UK server. That means your business data stays exactly where you want it to.
For any business handling customer data, that’s a significant advantage from a GDPR perspective.
No per-task pricing
Most automation platforms charge based on how many tasks or actions you run each month. That’s fine when you’re running a handful of automations, but costs spiral quickly as usage grows. n8n doesn’t work that way — you get unlimited executions, so your automation costs stay predictable as your business scales.
It connects to almost anything
n8n integrates with over 400 apps out of the box, and because it’s open source, custom integrations can be built for anything with an API. If your business uses niche or industry-specific software, n8n can almost certainly talk to it.
It’s visual and transparent
Workflows in n8n are built visually — you can see exactly what happens at each step, what data flows where, and what triggers each action. There are no black boxes. If something needs changing, you can see exactly how it works.
What can it actually do?
Here are some real examples of what we build for clients with n8n:
- Lead capture to CRM pipeline — website form submissions automatically create contacts, assign them to the right team member, and trigger a welcome sequence
- Invoice processing — incoming invoices are extracted, matched against purchase orders, and logged into the accounting system
- Report generation — weekly summaries compiled from multiple sources and delivered by email every Monday morning
- Stock and supplier alerts — automated notifications when inventory drops below a threshold, with reorder emails drafted and ready to send
- AI-powered document handling — incoming documents classified, key data extracted, and routed to the right person or system
These aren’t theoretical. They’re running today for businesses across the Cotswolds, Worcestershire, and the wider Midlands.
Is it right for your business?
If you’re currently paying for Zapier or Make and finding the costs are creeping up, n8n is worth a serious look. If you have compliance concerns about where your data is processed, even more so. And if you need automations that go beyond simple “if this, then that” triggers, n8n’s flexibility is hard to beat.
That said, n8n is more powerful than it is simple. It benefits from having someone who knows the platform set things up properly — which is where we come in.
Let’s talk about it
At Chamberlain Technology, n8n is our automation platform of choice. We use it because it gives our clients the best combination of power, flexibility, and value — with full transparency about what’s been built and how it works.
